Reliance is a project born in the spring of 2020, when strict physical distancing measures were put in place to curb the spread of Covid-19. Family members were often put in the impossible situation of not being able to say goodbye to their loved ones in lockdown at a hospital or a nursing home.

Touched and saddened by this reality, we reached out to several nursing homes in Quebec with an idea that we thought might help. We offered to provide them with the materials and support to make a bracelet made of wooden beads, where each bead symbolized a family member or friend who in normal circumstances would have been at the bedside of their loved one in the final moments of their life.

Each loved one was able to show their support by writing their name or a message on a bead, as well as in a little notebook. The bracelet and notebook were then offered to the person facing the end of their life, to be held in the palm of their hand as a symbol of the comforting presence of those who, together, would accompany them on their final journey.
